Duke Barely Escapes in Snowy Chestnut Hill 62-61

By February 12, 2013No Comments

It was one of those nights that Duke fans are used to, but yet they never really get any easier to take. This time Duke came out on top…barely. Duke on the strength of a Mason Plumlee free through just gets by Boston College. Never thought I would use strength, free throw and Mason Plumlee in a sentence but there you go. Mason went 1 out of 2 to give Duke he one point lead that would be the difference in the game. Plumlee was awarded that trip to the line after pulling down a monster rebound and getting hacked in the process.

Duke was lucky to be in a position to win this game after a lackluster and uninspiring first half that seemed to energize the Eagles. Duke would turn the ball over consistently in the first half (9) but finished the game with total of 13.

A lot was made of the travel situation for Duke arriving the day of the game and possibly a little later in the day than they wanted, but being Duke and using excuses just don’t mix. Clearly Duke was off but you have to give credit to the Boston College defense for taking away Mason Plumlee for the most part, limiting Dukes shooters and also capitalizing on Duke miscues.

Duke was more than fortunate to go into the half ties with BC and for BC you would think as bad as Duke played there would be more breathing room, or any at all for that matter.

Duke began to right the ship a bit on offense in the second half limiting the turnovers to 4 and finding ways to get Mason Plumlee in better situations and Mason did a much better job of passing out of the double team. Duke was able to shoot much better from 3 in the second half, going 5 for 10 also Duke made its mark at the free throw line going 10-12 in the second half including a 7 of 10 performance from Mason Plumlee.

Duke did have to mount a mini comeback after the Eagles grabbed the lead and did so off of a Quinn Cook 3-pointer and a pair of Mason Plumlee free throws with under a minute left. The last point scored would be a Mason Plumlee free throw to put Duke up 1.
