Duke Wins ACC Opener Against Wake 80-62

By January 5, 2013No Comments

Duke, while not experiencing the slow start they had in the last 2 games, did not finish extraordinarily well despite beating Wake Forest 80-62.

In the first half, Duke rained 3 pointers to grab the lead and hold it throughout the game.  Ryan Kelly had his best game of the year with 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5 out of 7 from beyond the arc.  Kelly did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 13 of Duke’s first 19 points on his way to 17 at the break.  Kelly fouled out in the second half, but Duke would be fine: Duke’s other scorers shouldered the load.  Seth Curry bounced back from a disappointing game against Davidson to give Duke 22 points, tying Ryan Kelly for the team lead.

Mason Plumlee would resume his double-double ways, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds for Duke.  While not an offensive juggernaut, Plumlee played a much smarter game and was solid with only one turnover despite double-teams by Wake. Another Dukie that got off the schneid was Rasheed Sulaimon, who previously had two sub-par games in a row but against Wake Forest, in his first ACC game, scored 12 points on 5 for 11 shooting.

Quinn Cook had his coldest game shooting as a Devil going 0-11, but had his best day assist-wise, diming 14 to his fellow teammates to only 1 turnover.  Cook was seen after the game working on his shot, so opponents beware.

Even with Duke’s hot shooting in the first half, Wake Forest, on a last second layup at the end of the first half, cut the Duke lead to 11.

Duke began the second half on a 24-to-10 run to pull away and led by 25 near the 11 minute mark of the second half.

More analysis later on the good, the bad, and the ugly in Duke’s win in Cameron against Wake.
