Official Duke Statement on Alex Murphy Transfer:

DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore forward Alex Murphy has decided to leave Duke University, school officials announced Friday. Murphy departs Duke in good academic standing and is expected to transfer to another Division I school.

“I have enjoyed my time at Duke and am thankful for the support of my coaches, teammates and the fans,” said Murphy. ”However, I feel that it is in my best interest to leave the program at this point. I have grown and developed on and off the court during my time in Durham and am excited about my future.”

A 6-9, 230-pound forward from Wakefield, R.I., Murphy has appeared in five games this season, averaging 1.0 points and 1.0 rebounds per game while hitting 1-of-6 shots from the field and 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

As a redshirt freshman during the 2012-13 season, Murphy played in 31 games and averaged 2.1 points and 1.0 rebounds per game while shooting 27-of-55 (.491) from the field, 5-of-24 (.208) from three-point range and 5-of-12 (.417) from the free throw line. He scored a career-high 11 points in a loss at No. 25 Miami.

“Alex has been absolutely great for our program and our university,” said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “He is a top-notch young man and an excellent player. He comes from an amazing family and it was an honor for us to have him here at Duke. We wish him the very best and we always want to be a part of his future. We are friends and friends of the family and totally supportive of his decision.”
