Perfect Night for a Plumlee or 2, and Quinn Cooks and Dishes

By December 20, 2012No Comments

The Duke Blue Devils shook off first half rust to blow out the Cornell Big Red 88-47. Duke had the Big Red seeing Blue and White once the second half began and Duke turned on the defensive pressure. Duke held the Big Red to 17 points in the second half. Cornell ended the game with more turnovers than shots made (26).

Duke fans, me among them, have been geeked to get Marshall Plumlee into a game for the first time this year and that wish was granted, Plumlee played 2 minutes and blocked a shot and had a rebound. The night however belonged to older brother Mason who had a perfect night from the field going 8 for 8 and scoring 18 points. Mason out muscled and out played the Cornell bigs and showed why he is a POY candidate.

Seth Curry paced Duke with 20 points hitting shot after shot and showing just how NBA ready his game is. Curry shot 7 for 10 from the field and 50% from 3.

Quinn Cook had a career night in assists dishing out 12 to only 1 turnover Cook also scored 6 points off of 2 three pointers. Cook has served notice that he may have been underrated  by pundits in the off-season. His play so far this year has been stellar and has solidified Duke at that position and is probably the key to Dukes early success this year.

Freshman Rasheed Sulaimon continued to play beyond his years. The fearless freshman was all over the court scoring 16 points but the most impressive stats may be his 3 steals. Sulaimons ball pressure allowed Duke to ratchet up the pressure causing live ball turnovers and easy points on transition.

Good signs for Duke was the play of the bench. Duke was able to notch 21 points from the bench. Alex Murphy scored 7 and Amile Jefferson 8 and gave Coach K good solid minutes off the bench giving the Devils added versatility going forward into tomorrows game and into the ACC season.
